They spent the next couple of hours studying the texts, making notes about the various societies and occult rituals that were conducted. At lunchtime Binky went to find a telephone and put a call through to the House of Lords.

When he returned to the reading room, he was very excited. ‘Lord Harrington has returned to the House of Lords and has asked to see me. What would you like to do? We’ve not seen your mysterious shadow, have we? Shall I escort you home, or would you prefer to stay here and gather more information?’

Bundle leaned back in her chair and tapped the end of her pencil on the chair’s arm. ‘I think I’m fine here. There’s been no sign of anyone, has there? You go to the Lords and see what Lord Harrington has to say for himself.’

‘Well, if you’re sure,’ said Binky. ‘If you have any concerns, then you can always send a telegram and ask Daniels to escort you home.’

‘Oh, that’s a jolly good idea. I might do that.’ Bundle smiled at her husband and accepted his kiss on the cheek.

After Binky left, Bundle went to a small café nearby for a hurried lunch, and then she returned to her studies.

Although she spent the entire afternoon thoroughly engrossed in her research she was still unable to find out what exactly the strange artefact had to do with the Arcane Circle. She did find out a little more about the society itself, and what she discovered made her shiver.

At five o’clock in the afternoon, Bundle was quite exhausted. She gathered together all of the notes she had made and stacked all the books together in a pile. Then she went to tell the librarian to say she was going home.

As she left the building, she spied taxis lined up in a row before her. There were only three, but as no one was around, she was confident one was hers. Hearing footsteps behind her, Bundle quickly turned around, but there was nobody in sight. Increasing her pace and tightening her grip on her books, Bundle marched towards the taxis, holding her breath. Bright sunshine glinted off the taxis’ roofs, but it was cold in the shadow of the British Library. A book shifted in her grasp and Bundle stopped suddenly to get a better grip on them all. Behind she heard a gasp and a shuffle as if someone had stopped suddenly. She glanced over her shoulder; there was nothing but shadows. Berating herself for having an overactive imagination, Bundle squared her shoulders and carried on walking. Her skin prickled and she fought the sensation of wanting to smooth down the hairs on the back of her neck.

Someone claimed one of the taxis, rapidly followed by a lady with a fur coat and an impossibly small dog. Now, there was only one taxi left. Bundle scurried towards it. Beads of perspiration formed below her nose, and she ran her tongue over the cupid’s bow of her upper lip, tasting salt and fear.
